Gil Dudson could face lengthy ban after brain explosion in Wire win

Warrington forward Gil Dudson saw red on his return to Catalans following a punch on opposition winger Tom Johnstone in Perpignan.

The brain explosion put Warrington under pressure, with the scores locked at 14-14 with 15 minutes to go.

However, Josh Thewlis sealed the victory for the visitors with a try in the dying stages of the feisty clash, with Matty Nicholson providing the assist.

Dudson, 32, faced his former club for the first time, having been sent off for headbutting in his final appearance for the Dragons during their play-off defeat against Leeds last season.

He made the move to Warrington ahead of the new season on a two-year deal, suffering a broken hand during pre-season.

The Welsh international made his comeback and official debut for the club against Castleford in the 38-0 victory, and also featured against Hull FC before the trip to face his former club in the south of France.

Dudson will now be looking at an extended period on the sidelines through suspension, with Warrington set to take on another one of his former club’s in Wigan in Round Nine at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Warrington make it eight

Warrington claimed a record eighth straight victory with the 20-14 victory over Catalans, giving them a four-point lead at the top of the Super League table.

Thewlis, given the nod over Matty Russell on the wing, opened the scoring thanks to a slick pass from full-back Matt Dufty.

Catalans hit back through Mike McMeeken, before taking the lead thanks to a penalty try awarded to Australian playmaker Adam Keighran, featuring in the halves alongside Arthur Mourgue.

Dufty scored a try of the season contender with a solo effort just before the break, with the Dragons taking a 10-8 lead into the second 40.

George Williams then gave Daryl Powell’s side the lead until Arthur Romano levelled the scores on the hour mark.

Dudson then saw red for his punch on Johnstone, putting all the pressure on the away side.

But their defence held on and it was Thewlis who scored the match winner with his second, while Catalans thought they hit back until the video referee awarded a no try for Romano.
