Test Match Special listeners were left stunned on day three of the Ashes Test in Adelaide when female commentator Alex Hartley discussed being on her period live on air.
During a discussion with fellow TMS commentator Daniel Norcross, Hartley apologised for being “very grumpy” on the second day of the third Test, saying: “I’m feeling more optimistic. I must admit yesterday I was very grumpy. Disclaimer. I did come on my period, so I think that might explain it.”

A non-plussed Norcross could only muster “OK” in reply before quickly moving back on to the cricket, adding “Cummins is in, bouncer through to the keeper and there’s no run there.”
Norcross went on in light-hearted fashion, saying that fellow TMS summariser Phil Tufnell was “equally grumpy”. Hartley added that “we’ve all spent so much time together, maybe we’ve all synced up.”
Hartley found herself in the spotlight at the start of this year when she was given the “cold shoulder” by England players during the Women’s Ashes when she criticised their fitness.

Hartley, a former spinner who retired in 2023, told the TMS podcast that she was refused a TV interview with former England team-mate Sophie Ecclestone after questioning the fitness levels of the players when they crashed out of the T20 World Cup.
Hartley said: “I’ve been hung out to dry. The reason I said England aren’t as fit as Australia is because I want them to compete, I want them to be better and I want them to win. But I’ve been given the cold shoulder ever since – not by everyone but a few individuals, coaches and players. They haven’t looked at me.”
