Weather is the only winner – again – as Greenock cricket matches are rained off

FOR the fourth Saturday in a row, the weather was the only winner as far as Greenock Cricket Club were concerned, with both the 1st XI and Glenpark league matches called off without a ball being bowled.

Greenock had been due to make the short trip up the M8 to face local rivals and old foes Renfrew, with the club’s second XI hoping to host Vale of Leven at Glenpark – but very soon after curtains were opened across Inverclyde on Saturday morning it became clear that the prospects of any play in either fixture were close to zero.

Only two matches anywhere in the west of Scotland beat the weather on Saturday, and both were in WDCU Championship Division Four, with Mearns Titans winning away to Alps and Hillhead’s 3rd XI easing to a comfortable win over the Cavaliers.

And while the weather was a little less inclement on Sunday, Greenock’s Cricket Scotland Challenge Cup first round tie against Dundee HSFP was called off for a second week because of poor ground conditions.

A third attempt will be made to play the game this Sunday, June 22, and this time there has to be some form of conclusion, even if it is a coin toss, as the ties in the second round are scheduled to be played on Sunday, June 29.

Greenock’s first XI are due to return to league action this Saturday, June 21, at home to Helensburgh, while Glenpark are scheduled to travel to Clydesdale Bees on Sunday.

The weather did relent enough on Sunday to allow Greenock’s third XI, Hillend, to maintain their winning form in the league so far away to Uddingston’s Development XI in the Sunday League Division Two.

Batting first in a match reduced to 30 overs per side, Hillend scored 155 all out, with Usman Mansoor top scoring on 26 ahead of Mahmood Amadzai on 20 and Nikhil Kadyan on 17.

Uddingston, in reply, were bowled out for 130, with Arun and Mu Ahmadzai each taking three wickets and Nikhil Kadyan and Ma Amadzai two apiece.

Hillend are scheduled to be back in action tonight (Tuesday) away to Mearns Challengers in the Midweek League.

The young players are working very hard at their weekly training sessions and their efforts are clearly paying off.

New young players will be made welcome at training sessions which take place at Glenpark on Wednesday evenings from 6pm.

The game is due to start at 11am and included in the Emus side will be Greenock’s two Aussie amateurs, Callum Henry and Will Jenkins, and there should be plenty of good cricket on display for spectators.
