Tributes paid to popular Lake District businessman and rugby union player

TRIBUTES have been paid to a Cumbrian businessman who shaped his family’s popular Lake District retail business with ‘humility and care’.

Richard Standring died peacefully surrounded by family in Keswick Cottage Hospital on November 29 following a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

In his spare time Richard was a keen rugby union player with over 500 games played for Keswick RUFC however throughout his working life the businessman was at the forefront of carrying forward his family business – Lakeland Leather.

The company, which started with a small store in Ambleside, now has Cumbrian bases in Keswick, Bowness, Kendal and Carlisle as well as stores as far away as Chester and York.

Lakeland Leather began in 1955. It founded by Richard’s father and Richard spent his life ‘building on that legacy with quiet dedication, remarkable instinct, and an unwavering love for the family business’.

A Lakeland Leather spokesman said: “He carried it forward with humility and care, shaping the company into what it is today.

“Those who worked with Richard will remember his calm presence, his deep knowledge of retail, his absolute love of leather goods, and his ability to guide without ever seeking the spotlight. He never wanted fuss or praise; he simply believed in doing things the right way.

“Richard’s legacy lives on in Lakeland Leather, in the values he strengthened, the standards he set, and the people he inspired. We feel incredibly fortunate to have known him and to have been part of the story he continued with such pride.

“We will miss him greatly and we’ll carry forward the business he loved with the same integrity he embodied every day.”

The team at Lakeland Leather said their thoughts are with Richard’s wife Beverly and their family at this time.

A minute’s silence was held before Keswick’s league game with Northern.

The club said he was ‘a great club servant and honorary life member who played more than 500 games for the club’.

In a statement on social media, Keswick RUFC said: “Richard was very pleased to see the opening of the new clubhouse and was a great supporter of the successful Big Build Project. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him.

“Our heartfelt condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time”
