This is how the Woolston Rovers vs Crosfields rugby league ‘derby’ played out

CROSFIELDS gained revenge for the earlier season defeat to Woolston Rovers when they claimed a hard-fought 35-12 win in National Conference League Division One at a sun-drenched Monk Sports Club on Saturday.

Both sides played their part in producing a great amateur rugby league spectacle in sweltering heat, recorded pitchside at 33 degrees.

Rovers opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a try from scrum-half James Tarpey. Stand-off Ryan Brown converted but Soap responded 11 minutes later with a try from stand-off Ben Steele. Winger Nathan Taylor added the conversion to level matters.

Just before the half-hour mark Rovers regained the lead when hooker Harry Files crossed and Brown converted.

Crosfields centre Taylor Boyne went over for a try to reduce the deficit and then five minutes before the break Steele scored his second try to put his side in front for the first time. Taylor added the conversion to make the half-time score 16-12 to Soap.

A minute into the second half Crosfields centre Luke Walker crossed for a try and that was followed 10 minutes later with a touchdown from substitute Sam Worrall.

And when scrum-half Jamie Abram landed a drop goal it gave the visitors a three-score cushion.

The visitors finished the game with a flourish as full-back Joe Roper and Abram added tries in the final 10 minutes.

After the game Rovers head coach Liam Lawton said: “We started the game really well and was definitely the best side for the opening half an hour but we just dropped off in the last 10 minutes of the first half and allowed Crosfields to get in front.

“We then conceded straight after half time and the whole momentum of the game had swung and they grew in confidence and made it difficult for us.

“The final scoreline was a bit harsh as we really gave everything and if we had a bit more composure at the end of the first half then the result could have been different but we have to concede that Soap were the better side overall and deserved the win.

“I do think that every player on both teams deserve an enormous amount of credit for playing the way they did in sweltering conditions.”
