Taunton St Andrews remain bottom after defeat to Burbage & Easton Royal


WEPL Premier One: Burbage & Easton Royal 167-7 (20pts) defeated Taunton St Andrews 166 (5pts) by three wickets

Taunton St Andrews First XI travelled to Wiltshire play against Burbage and Easton Royal hoping to build upon their victory the previous weekend. However at the end of a close fought match it was the home team who came out the victors by three wickets.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat the Saints slipped to 39 for three before James Rew was joined by James Matravers, who between them added 43 before Matravers was out for 17.

With the score on 93 Rew was out for 54 which he scored off 85 balls  and included seven 4s.

Lower in the order skipper Joe Wadham made 27 before the visitors were all out for 166 in 49.2 overs.

When Burbage replied Matravers struck early on removing the top trio of batter making the score 35 for three in the  fifth over. When Ollie Heard saw the back of Pete Trego the board showed 48 for four, and hopes of a Saints victory were high. At this stage however Delon Peiris and Crofton Keyes came together and saw the total onto 105 before Peiris was out for 23 bowled by Jay Terry.

Matravers claimed his fourth wicket when he had Keyes caught by ‘keeper Rew for 42, and when next over Toby Williams-Thomas claimed Alby Berridge leg before, Burbage needed 31 for victory with four wickets remaining. However Adam Ball then stepped up for the hosts and remained at the wicket to see the hosts to 167 in the 36th over without further loss.

Matravers ended with four for 26 from his seven overs one of which was a maiden.

In the Premier Division of the Somerset Cricket League, Saints Second XI who started in the lower reaches of the table were at home to table toppers Frome. After opting to bat first Saints found themselves 43 for four before Thomas Watson and Henry Mason-Walshaw came together and took the total onto 136, when the latter was out for 50 off 45 balls with six 4s and a 6.

Sixteen year old Watson making his Second XI debut for this season stayed at the wicket until he was the ninth wicket to fall having made 77 from 88 balls with eight 4s and one 6, shortly after which Saints were all out for 191 in 38 overs.

When they replied Frome were bowled out for 169 in 31 overs, Watson rounding off a good day by taking five for 47, while C J Mc Kenna took four for 33.

In Division Four of the SCL Saints A XI hosted Taunton Deane Third XI who batting first were all out for 220 off 38.1 overs. Graham Johnson top scored with 36 while Val Similien made 33, while for the hosts there were two wickets each for Rhys Hockey, Andrew Batstone and Manoj Galhenage.

In reply Anburaj Alexander was the mainstay of the Saints innings sharing a 34 run opening stand with Sam Cohen (16) and adding 62 with Ross Adams who made 10 for the second.

Alexander remained out in the middle to take the score onto 157 before he was the seventh wicket to fall by which time he had moved onto 75, which came off 96 balls with 13 fours.  Batstone scored a patient 15 lower in the order but ran out of partners as  Saints were all out for 179 in 36.2overs giving Deane victory by 41 run
