AFTER a flying start to the season, Settle 1st XI came unstuck in their third match in the league stage of the NPL 40-over Cup.

Josh Tolley hit 76 for hosts Euxton as they posted a par 199 all out from 39 overs, with Lancashire second-team paceman Will Vause (4-43) returning his best figures for Settle.

As ever, skipper Amar Ullah (4-5) was among the wickets, with Will Davidson taking 2-29 and under-16 Noah Smith picking up a couple of catches behind the stumps.

With the early departure of Zane Nirodi at his old stamping ground, Settle’s reply was stabilised by Wiil Davidson (32) and Ullah (23) but the middle order collapsed.

John Davidson had a lean time last season, but this year has amassed 228 from three NPL matches. Going in at eight, he tried to rescue the situation with 50 from 66 deliveries, Vause chipping in with 22 at a run a ball. But the visitors were all out 35 runs short after 38 overs.

Settle continue their Cup campaign against high-fliers Blackpool at Marshfield on Saturday. Both teams are in contention for the last spot in the quarter-finals, so a win and an improved net run rate are a priority.

Settle seconds bounced back from last week’s defeat to put their foot firmly in the door of Westmorland League Division One. They shot visitors Shireshead 1st XI out for 153, with two wickets apiece for John Tarbox, Kevon Beckles and skipper Nick Cokell, while spinner Gus Ogden cleared up the tail with3-13 from five overs.

The reply saw Paul Clarke drop anchor for an unbeaten 59, with Dan Strickland (24) and Cokell (26) consolidating the innings. Paul Dockerty then ushered his side home with a pacey 19 not out and three overs to spare. They are on the road to Carnforth on Saturday.

On Sunday Settle 3rd XI welcomed Ingleton seconds in Division Five’s opening match, a moment to remember the visitors’ much lamented captain, David McGonnigal, who had sadly passed away in December. He was the centre of all things cricket in Ingleton, and a great friend and neighbour to Settle.

Ingleton struggled to 83 all out, thanks largely to the leg spin of Jason Paul (5-22) and 2-6 from George Dockerty on debut, but not before Matt Young (26) and Chris Fleming (20) had made an impact. Returning wicket-keeper Shaun Airey shone with two catches, two stumpings and two run outs. Airey was then unbeaten for 61 in 36 balls, back at Marshfield after several years with Gargrave, joined by Simon Walker (20 not out) to secure a ten-wicket win.
