Inverclyde Cricket Club lost out in a 30-over-a-side friendly against Milngavie’s 2nd XI – but there were plenty of positives for the locals to take from a testing encounter against a team from a higher league, and there was a good, competitive edge to a match which was played in the right spirit throughout.

Openers Dave Cooke and Scott Campbell continued their good partnership from the previous weekend until Campbell was bowled by Shiram for 13 in the 12th over at 32 for one.

Two overs later, Cooke was caught at point after a good knock of 31 held the Inverclyde innings together; Zander Lovell and Gareth James were both dismissed in the push for late runs and Gordin Lappin and Ethan Burke remained not out as Inverclyde’s innings closed on 117 for 7.

Milngavie’s reply was pegged back by two early Walton wickets, both catches by Campbell at mid off, who then trapped opener Mahood for 19 to leave the visitors at 48 for 3.

A wicket from Paul Singh and Zander Lovell’s first senior wicket for Inverclyde, dismissing Halshar LBW, reduced the visitors to 77 for 5 after 16 overs, with Inverclyde sensing a possible win.

Inverclyde’s bowlers and fielders played well in the warm conditions, with Walton taking 3 for 28, Singh 2 for 25, and Lovell 1 for 12.

Inverclyde 117 for 7 (30 overs); Milngavie 2nds 118 for 6 (30 overs).

Practices continue at Gourock Park on Tuesdays from 6.30pm.
