A NEW initiative has been launched to help young cricketers in Worcester.
Insurance broker Howden Worcester has teamed up with Worcestershire Cricket Foundation to set up a Kit Exchange.
This scheme aims to recycle and reuse cricket equipment, allowing young players to continue enjoying the sport or try it out for the first time without the financial burden of purchasing new gear.
The Kit Exchange is at the Howden branch on Foregate Street.
Here, people can donate, exchange, or pick up second-hand cricket kits, enabling more children to play cricket, stay active, and develop new skills.
James Parker, branch manager at the insurance broker, said: “As a team, we’re really passionate about supporting our local community — and cricket plays a huge role in Worcester life.
“We’re delighted to do our part to support by way of our donation scheme, and the Kit Exchange.
“It’s a simple idea, but one that can make a big difference to young players who might not otherwise have the chance to get involved.
“We hope it will inspire more children to pick up a bat, join a club, and build confidence through sport.”
Billy Clark, executive director of the foundation, said: “At Worcestershire Cricket Foundation, we’re committed to making cricket more accessible for all.
“So we’re delighted to be partnering with Howden to establish our kit recycling scheme, helping us remove barriers to participation by putting quality equipment into the hands of those who need it.”
The initiative comes at a time when day-to-day costs for households are higher than they have been over the past five years, despite a recent decrease in inflation.
With a starter cricket set costing anywhere between £40 to £100 online, and specialist equipment such as pads costing around £50-60, the price of equipment can be a real barrier to entry.
Howden is encouraging donations of all cricket kit, including bats, balls, pads, stumps, bails, and more.
Anyone wishing to collect such items is welcome to visit the branch and select what they need free of charge.
