Isle of Wight cricket round up – Ventnor sneak home in thriller

Isle of Wight cricket teams were in action last weekend, as Ventnor claimed a nail-biting one wicket victory with just two balls to spare.

It was at Steephill where Ventnor chased down Totton and Eling’s valiant 243, which was restricted by Dineth Thimodya’s three wickets for 38 runs, a remarkable economy rate in addition to his dismissals.

But the visitor’s bowlers consistently broke partnerships, sending the majority of Ventnor’s top and middle order back to the clubhouse except for Thimodya, the anchor of the innings.

Ventnor rebuilt well with Henry Edwards’ 44 and George Watts’ 45, but succumbed to the pressure of the travelling side, as Thimodya lost his wicket for 78. with 38 runs still to get.

Cowes’ first XI scored with vigour, posting 243 in 35 overs, with Hashim Ariyur scoring 35, Gayan Kodikara 58, Luke Ridoutt 55 and Josh Rice 47 – their opponents, Northwood second XI, were skittled for 81, with half the wickets going to Jason Heap, completing his five-for in exchange for just 17 runs.

Their opponents, Arreton, felt the wrath of the bowling attack, with Nathan Moore, Alfie Pease and Rahul sharing the spoils as they clattered through the Arreton top, middle and lower order clinically.

Freshwater’s opening pair of M Holliday (68) and Graham Gosden (38) set the foundation for a competitive innings, added to be Dave Maclean’s 38 at number six.

Despite Paul Attrill (52) and Ellis Hinkley’s (38) promising start, the West Wight bowling attack proved to be too much, as Dave Maclean took four wickets and Sam Vandecasteele took three.
