A MAN who was arrested following the death of a 10-year-old girl has been released under investigation.
Poppy Atkinson, from Kendal, was killed when a car crashed on to a sports pitch at Kendal Rugby Union Football Club on Shap Road on Wednesday (March, 5).
A second child, an eight-year-old girl also from Kendal, was also taken to the hospital for treatment, but her injuries were said to not be ‘life-threatening’ on Thursday (March,6).

A 40-year-old man from Lancaster was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the incident.
He has since been released while investigative enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances of this incident.
In a statement following the crash yesterday, police said “‘there is no indication to suggest that this incident was a deliberate act”.
Poppy’s family have since paid tribute to the aspiring footballer saying they “will never be whole again” following her death.
In a statement released yesterday, (March 6) they said: “Poppy touched so many lives, it was easy to see why, her energy, character, spirit and passion for football was infectious and touched huge numbers of people.
“The hole in our lives and so many around us that Poppy leaves is enormous, we will never be whole again. This world has lost a spirit like no other, she was a force of nature. She was so special, she was too good for this world,” they said.
One of Poppy’s idols, Barrow-born England star Georgia Stanway, also took to social media to pay tribute to the 10-year-old Manchester United fan.
“The football world will always remember Poppy and mine and Ella Toone next game will be designated in Poppy’s honour,” she said.
The GT7 Football Academy, which holds training sessions at the rugby club, said they were “deeply distressed and saddened by the events”.
In a statement on social media, a spokesperson said: “Loved and respected by all coaches, teammates and all the GT7 family. Poppy was a shining light, always played with an infectious attitude to improve and a smile to match.
“Our hearts go out to her family and all affected. The entire GT7 family shares in their grief.”
