Division One victory alludes Settle despite best efforts of overseas duo

DESPITE the best efforts of Settle’s pair of star overseas amateurs, they could not produce the optimum effect on their respective teams.

The first team were put in at Leyland but soon lost their openers. Sub pro Kieren Grimshaw (19) and OA Mumbai Premier batsman Gautam Waghela then shared a fifty partnership to stabilise the innings.

A solid Waghela made the top score of 65 and a rearguard assault of 44 from 38 balls by Will Davidson seemed to put the visitors in a strong position.

But 197 all out from 45.3 overs is always going to be problematic at this level, where batting through the 50 overs is a priority in the first innings.

The visiting bowlers struggled to make an impression as the hosts took the game at three wickets down after 38 overs. Settle will aim for their first league win as they travel to Chorley for their third match in the competition.

The second team put visitors Morecambe in to bat, resulting in a challenging total of 275-6 from 23 overs. There were two wickets apiece for John Tarbox, Gus Ogden and Dan Strickland who al had to work hard for any reward.

In reply, a steady start came from openers Paul Clarke (18) and Harvey Green, still in the runs with 42 from 32 deliveries. Strickland played well for 16 before retiring, but with wickets tumbling at the other end, it was Barbadian OA Kevon Beckles who held out with an unbeaten 117 at a run a ball.

A win became impossible, but his determination and defence in the tail ensured at least a losing draw and four points at 235-8. Silverdale 1st XI come to Marshfield on Saturday in the Westmorland One competition.

Gus Ogden (38) top-scored for Settle 3rds in their total of 127 against visitors Millom. Sam Walker then took 3-18 but this could not prevent defeat by five wickets. They travel to Milnthorpe on Sunday while the 4ths entertain Barrow.

In their first outing of the season, Settle’s women narrowly lost at Bretherton. Kate Hargreaves took two wickets while in the reply Tricia Chapman made 21, with 14 runs each for Kerry Holgate and skipper Rebecca Hulse.
