Cricket: Hadleigh boost survival hopes with vital win against rivals


CRICKET: Hadleigh & Thundersley breathed life back into their survival hopes with a four wicket win against relegation rivals Billericay.

Hadleigh opted to field first in the Premier Division clash at John Burrows and bowled Billericay out for 187.

Billericay were 0/2 before skipper Matthew Bell and Rowan Elliot added 135 for the third wicket.

Bell top scored with 75 while Elliott added 44 but Callum McDonald with 16 not out was the only other batter to reach double figures.

Jack Sinfield (4/29) was the pick of Hadleigh’s bowlers while Louis Poynter (2/29) and Ethan Rogers (2/38) also chipped in.

In reply, Hadleigh made it home for the loss of six wickets with opener Tom Rollinson leading the way with 64 not out.

Sinfield added an important 59 to ensure victory and a vital 20 points for Hadleigh who remain at the foot at the table.

However, Hadleigh are now just four points behind Billericay who sit immediately above the drop zone.

In Division One, Old Southendian & Southchurch slipped to fifth in the table after suffering a two wicket defeat at Upminster.

Southendian scored 261 after being put into bat first.

Dan Cooke top scored with 84 while opener Hafiz Yawer Afzal added 72 before Upminster made it home for the loss of eight wickets.

Former Essex bowler Aaron Beard led the way with 56 to secure victory for third placed Upminster.

In Division Two, Westcliff moved fifth in the standings after beating Old Brentwoods by 67 runs.

Westcliff were put into bat after losing the toss and were bowled out for 296.

S Kumar scored a fine 117 while opener P Patel hit 42 before Old Brentwoods made 229 in reply.

A Ajikumar (3/28) and C Lees (3/33) were the pick of Westcliff’s bowlers.

In Division Three, Leigh on Sea stayed top of the table after beating Newham by 113 runs.

Batting first, Leigh scored 285/6 with S Cupido scoring 75 and fellow opener J Edwards 67.

Newham never looked like reaching the required total and were bowled out for 172.

In Division Four, Benfleet went third in the table following a 92 run win against second placed Walthamstow.

Benfleet opted to bat first after winning the toss and scored 258/9.

Gavin Blowes top scored with 90 while Hammad Ul Hassan added 89 before Walthamstow were bowled out for 166.

Luke Whitbourn took 5/18 and Benfleet are now just 11 points behind their hosts.

Elsewhere, fifth placed Wickford beat Hawks by 312 runs.

Wickford scored 420/7 with Jatin Kukreja hitting 130 and Tom Merritt 64 before Hawks were bowled out for 108.

John Grimes (4/57) was the pick of Wickford’s bowlers.
