An Oxford cricket club has launched an appeal to help a player and his family who were in the eye of Hurricane Melissa when it hit Jamaica.
Horspath Cricket Club has started the Jamaica Hurricane Relief Appeal for overseas star all-rounder Derval Green.
His community was severely hit when the hurricane made landfall in late October, causing devastation.
Will Eason, the Horspath’s club’s director of cricket, has been in regular contact with the Jamaican international, who who made a big impact for the Home Counties Premier Cricket League Division 2 club last season.
He said: “His house withstood much of the hurricane, though his front door and windows were blown out, which he will have to get fixed.
“He currently has 13 people, consisting of family and friends, who unfortunately all lost their houses, living with him.
“He has been driving for a couple of hours each day to get food and essentials for the community, though from what I understand, there is a stringent limit on how much fuel is available.”
The West Indian’s achievements last season included a brilliant unbeaten 141 with 13 sixes in a resounding win against Wokingham and a superb spell of bowling to return 6-45 in a victory over Falkland.
The cricket club hopes a collective effort will give some respite to Derval and his community as they navigate the aftermath of the storm.
