College’s rugby partnership offers talented teens pathway to elite level

A partnership has been launched to give talented young rugby union players a pathway into the game’s elite level.

Burnley College is working with Sale Sharks Women’s Academy to offer a programme enabling talented teenagers to develop their rugby game while also earning a post-16 education.

The college is now appealing to aspiring rugby union players from across Lancashire to get in touch if they are interested in joining the pathway.

Academy on-field and strength and conditioning coaches will bring top-level rugby sessions to students, who will also receive support on nutrition and injury rehabilitation to perform their best.

The S&C sessions will take place at the college’s on-site gym which also features a cryotherapy chamber to aid recovery and an environment chamber, which can replicate climates such as high-altitude and high humidity to improve performance, while also having access to the facilities at Sale.

This will be delivered alongside a student’s chosen academic studies at the college.

Sale Sharks Women currently play in the Premiership, the highest level of rugby in England and run semi-professionally.

Brad Pates, curriculum manager at Burnley College, said: “We’re really proud to form this partnership with a powerhouse in professional rugby like Sale Sharks so we can support young women across Lancashire as they continue their rugby development.

“This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to providing world-class opportunities for our students, both academically and athletically.”

Students selected for the programme will also have the chance to train with the first team and speak to leading figures at the club.

Young female rugby union players interested in pursuing a career in the game are urged to email Morgan Ogle at Burnley College on mogle@burnley.ac.uk or call 01282 733180 for more information.
