Carreras clinches maiden ton as Redlynch reach new club record

It was away to South Wilts third team where skipper Ian Tanner won the toss and elected to bat first on what soon became a run-fest of a day.

Jos Carreras came in at number three with the score at 47-2 after both the openers had been dismissed and proceeded to play a classy knock, scoring a run a ball 100 as carnage took place from his other batting partners.

The South Wilts fielders were chasing the ball all around the ground as Andy Soutar smashed 81 from 43 balls (17x4s, 1×6) and took the game away from the home team.

Soutar was eventually dismissed by a stunning catch from young wicketkeeper J Redding.

The seven South Wilts bowlers used couldn’t stop the flow of runs as Nathan Pollard also scored a handy 34 before looking to go big and being bowled.

Will Hewlett came in with 11 overs to go and didn’t hold back, amassing a rapid 65 from 31 balls (6x4s, 5x6s) to push Redlynch past the 300-run mark.

Ivo Leyland picked up two wickets with the ball (2-37) before he was soon back at the crease with his pads on after South Wilts lost the hard-hitting Nick Partridge (21) early on.

South Wilts never looked like chasing down the mammoth total at 87-2, but defiance from Leyland (45) made it tough for Redlynch to take all 10 wickets in the hope for a maximum points haul.

The slower bowling of Hewlett (3-28), George Hayes (2-34) and Wil Powell (2-38) was the most effective, combined with dynamic field placings, it saw South Wilts at 188-8 in the 43rd over.

Hewlett got the ninth wicket with the penultimate ball of the game, which left South Wilts captain Jody Everett facing the last ball with all the fielders around his bat, from which he managed to defend to close the innings, with Redlynch winning by 166 runs.

It was another win for Redlynch’s second team as they beat Totton & Eling fourth team by 100 runs.

Skipper Ewan Tanner called correctly at the toss and without hesitation put the pads on and carried on his good form with 73 runs at the top of the order, with five more double-figure scores from the middle order it saw Redlynch scrape to 204/6.

But it was the team’s bowling effort that won them the game as Jack Sobucinski (2-12) and Thomas Padwick (2-18) broke open Totton’s top order before Katie Sell (2-40) and Oliver Stone (3-27) did the rest, bowling Totton out for 104.

It was a close game for the third team as they couldn’t quite defend 215, despite a 69 from Fin Coles and 62 from Calvin Cranmer, as the Dorset Indians CC chased the total down with an over to go.
