Billericay begin Premier Division season with home defeat

CRICKET: Billericay began life in the Premier Division with a three wicket defeat at home to Colchester& East Essex.

Billericay – who won promotion from Division One last season – opted to bat first after winning the toss but were dismissed for 204.

Rowan Elliott top scored with 58 while Arjun Bhardwaj added 56 and Grant Roelofsen 31 but the home-side fell from 134/3 to 204 all out.

Colchester took full advantage and made it home for the loss of seven wickets despite the best efforts of Bhardwaj who took 5/38.

In Division One, Old Southendian & Southchurch kicked off their campaign with a six wicket win at Gidea Park & Romford.

Gidea Park batted first after winning the toss and were bowled out for 144.Luke Clarke was the pick of Southendian’s bowlers as he took 3/26 before the visitors reached the required total for the loss of four wickets thanks to an important 57 not out from Ahsan Yousaf.

In Division Two, Westcliff suffered a 15 run defeat at home to Belhus.

Belhus opted to bat first and scored 259/9.Carl Lees (2/3), Adithya Ajikumar (2/21) and Sam Adley (2/85) all chipped in wickets before Westcliff were dismissed for 244 despite a brilliant 123 from skipper Joe Robbins.

In Division Three, Leigh on Sea beat Neo by six wickets.Neo chose to bat first and scored 220.

James Spencer (3/35) did most damage with the ball for Leigh while Nick Vanlint (2/9), Sevriano Cupido (2/42) and Joe Sexton (2/43) also bowled well before Leigh secured victory for the loss of four wickets.

Spencer led the way with 68 while Cupido guided Leigh home with a fine 65 not out.

In Division Four, Benfleet beat Rainham by five wickets.

Rainham were bowled out for 146 with Callum Wheeler taking 4/62 before Benfleet made it home for the loss of five wickets.

Opener Ben Prophet top scored with 46 while Luke Whitbourn hit 41 not out.

Elsewhere, Wickford tied with Roding Valley.

Batting first, Wickford scored 279/4 with Jatin Kukreja scoring 108 not out and Frankie McKenna adding 61 not out.

In reply, Valley also ended their innings on 279 thanks to two late run outs and fine bowling from Porag Hasan (3/44) and Zisan Abedin (3/51).
