Ventnor bowl ruthlessly to claim decisive victory and more in cricket roundup


A ruthless bowling display saw Ventnor claim an 110 run victory against Sarisbury Athletic, as Isle of Wight cricket teams secured key wins and suffered defeats at the weekend.

With Ventnor put in to bat by the home side, opener Joshua Carpenter started well, making 41 runs, while his partners fell cheaply, leaving the Island side 68 for 4.

New pair Alexander Stogdon and Will Mew rebuilt Ventnor’s innings, forging a partnership of 68, with Mew scoring 59.

The team then lost three wickets for 11 runs, and despite a spirited fightback from the tail, Ventnor ultimately fell to 211 all out – a target hard to defend if the opposition got in.

Sarisbury’s innings was nothing short of a disaster, as Ventnor’s bowling outfit dismissed the top order cheaply, and tore through their middle order for single figure scores.

The momentum was with the Islanders, as they bowled Sarisbury out for 101, claiming a decisive victory.

Archie Lucy claimed an impressive three wickets for 15 runs off his seven overs, while Daniel Cox went for 27 runs, taking three wickets from his nine overs and one ball.

Ryde failed to make Hythe and Dibden’s target of 166, with no batter making above 29 in the chase.

Ashley Goldsmith took three wickets for 21 runs for Ryde.

Ventnor’s second team fell to 63 for seven wickets, but recovered in style with a 50 from Ben Davies and a 100 from Ethan Short.

It was not enough, however, as opposition Bramshaw chased down the target despite four wickets from Chris Russell.

Shanklin and Godshill won by 34 runs thanks to valiant batting efforts from Matthew Lambourne, Harry Collier, Ben White and Seb Egerton-Read.

Opposition Bedhampton Mariners went well, but a patient bowling performance saw the Island team get over the line, with Ben White taking four wickets for 41 runs.

Freshwater defended their total of 301 against Shanklin and Godshill, with Graham Gosden, A Bridges and Steve Holbrook making good scores, and Gary Freeston top scoring for the West Wight team with 75.

For Shanklin and Godshill, Steve Egerton-Read made a hundred opening the batting, with G Speller making 44 – but the team failed to get over the line thanks to a five wicket haul from A Bridges.

Northwood’s first XI chased down St Helens to claim a six wicket win, with M Richards and D Chapman scoring 64 and 30, respectively.

The 171 run target was constructed from a patient 60 from opener J Winterbottom, and 74 from L Brown at six.

Northwood bowler S Keates took four wickets for 17 runs.

Ventnor’s third XI won conclusively as they bowled Wight Whizzers out for 83, with Jackson Parker taking three wickets for 36 runs.

Gary Legg was the pick of the batting order for Ventnor, making 87 runs as the team posted 195 in their 40 overs.

Newport Cricket Club won by seven wickets, chasing down Ventnor’s fourth XI’s total of 94.

Ventnor decisively won their midweek Hundred game against Northwood, scoring 184 with Mark Fletcher making 30 and Daniel Cox making 87.

Despite being on the losing side, Martyn Richards and David Chapman both made 36 runs for Northwood.
