IPL: Royal Challengers Bangalore v Gujarat Titans – prediction, stars to watch and suggested bets

Who, when, where

Royal Challengers Bangalore v Gujarat Titans, 3pm BST, Sunday 21 May 2023, Bengaluru

Talking points

The Gujarat Titans have already qualified for the play-offs. The Royal Challengers are still trying to do so. There is a heavy logjam in the middle of the 2023 IPL standings – and Bangalore need to navigate it quickly.

Bangalore have not played a home game in more than 20 days. They will relish being back in Bengaluru for a crucial clash against the reigning champions. The form of Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis at the top of the RCB order continues to impress.

Gujarat don’t want to lose momentum, but could probably experiment with different combinations and tactics in this match. They have Ireland seamer Josh Little back in the mix – and he could return to the XI.

A key juncture in this fixture could be the opening powerplay of the Bangalore innings. Gujarat fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been in fine form during the opening six overs and, against Kohli and du Plessis, he could be really challenged. This should make for some particularly entertaining viewing.

Head-to-head

Gujarat and Bangalore have a brief history. They have beaten each other once. This is the first time they will meet in the 2023 IPL season.

Stars to watch

Bangalore won’t have Australian seamer Josh Hazlewood for this match due to injury. That will mean more onus on Mohammed Siraj, who is good for it. He is one of the best swing bowlers on display this year.

Mohit Sharma is an IPL veteran. He doesn’t possess the pace of Shami, but his variations could be just the trick for conducive conditions in Bengaluru.

Prediction

This is looking to be RCB’s year. After three losses in three finals, they’re on course to reach a fourth. They could show they mean business with a win over the Titans here.

Suggested bets

Royal Challengers Bangalore to beat Gujarat Titans

Virat Kohli to be top batsman for Bangalore

Mohammed Shami to be top bowler for Gujarat
