England and Saracens playmaker cited for dangerous tackle : PlanetRugby

England playmaker Owen Farrell could be a doubt for the Six Nations after being cited for making a dangerous tackle in Saracens’ narrow victory over Gloucester.

The incident occurred late on in Friday’s Premiership game at Kingsholm, with the teams tied at 16-16.

Farrell’s shoulder made contact with the head of Cherry and Whites back-row Jack Clement, but it was not officially reviewed during the encounter.

Time had elapsed

TMO Claire Hodnett brought the 75th-minute incident to Karl Dickson’s attention, but the referee deemed that too much time had passed for them to stop the game and put it up on the big screen.

A statement from Saracens read: “Farrell’s hearing will take place on Tuesday 10 January at 6.30 pm and will be heard by an independent disciplinary panel chaired by Philip Evans with Becky Essex and Mitch Read.”

After escaping sanction, Farrell went on to produce the match-winning moment as a drop-goal helped the visitors to a 19-16 triumph.

Should it be deemed a mid-range incident, Farrell could be banned for six weeks, thus ruling him out of the start of the Six Nations.

Scotland opener

England begin their Six Nations campaign against Scotland on February 4 in what will be Steve Borthwick’s first game in charge.

Borthwick took over from Eddie Jones in December after the long-time Red Rose head coach was sacked following a poor 2022.

The former Leicester Tigers boss will be desperate to have Farrell available as England seek to get back on track looking ahead to the Rugby World Cup.
